Latest Update.
I have now started to tidy up the Lucas Family, it has grown and I am following more people as we read
General Information
Hi to anyone who stumbles across this Family Tree. It started as an idea to formulate a tree for our grandchildren, so they could develope it forward. It soon became an obsession. I started out with a little information and a great purpose. Now I have a lot of information and little purpose. I did a tree with only the Edgecombe name (various spellings) once completed, I was left with very little to do, and therefore decided to open up the tree, and try to get all the decendants from Ralph 1570. It is suprising that one marriage in the 16th century, can now show over 5000 decendants, and I am missing loads. The friendship you get with others, who you never see, who are also researching, is special. To anyone who is not sure about starting, dont unless you are committed. Hundreds start and fall by the way very quickly. The Edgecombe Tree starts in St Mellion but it was in Tewkesbury Gloucestershire England where it boomed, from there we moved all over the world, and branches can be found in this tree in most English speaking countries. Enjoy looking and report any errors please. I am now trying to work backwards on my mothers side, finding the Hockleys and the Devereux family. I will eventually try to tidy up the Lucas family as well and that should be it.
Where do names come from: I the early centuries before the 10th most people only had christian names (no offence to other religions) and they lived and died where they were born. As people started to move around they developed an additional name, i.e. If Charles from Edgcumbe moved to the next village he would be called Charles of Edgcumbe, this devolped and people started naming themselves such as John the Baker or Tom the Smith, from there it exploded.
Where do our names come from:
Devereux This name orinated in France as D'Evereux the name Evereaux was a town in Normandy the family related to us crossed to Ireland long before the french Revolution, and James join the British Navy from whence the Devereux name started for us.
Habitational name this is from a small village in the lee of a hill in Devon the village was called Edgcumbe.
Hockley: Habitational name from any of various places, for example in Essex and West Midlands. The former is so called from the Old English personal name Hocca which means mallow + leah which is a wood or clearing
Lucas: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, etc.: from the Latin personal name Lucas (Greek Loukas) ‘man from Lucania’.
